Mute Acquiescence

The time of Virginia Beach citizens standing in mute acquiescence is over.

Acquiescence means a silent submission or, submission with apparent consent. Mute means refraining from speech or utterance. To acquiesce means to comply quietly.

Does that describe you?

KEN STOLLE HOW WE MISS YOU!

I have been going through boxes and getting rid of years worth of notes, books (I still have my college books from the late 60's), records and all sorts of memoribillia that just takes up space.

Now that my children are grown and on their own, I moved into a smaller place and realized I don't have room for all the junk I've collected over the years.

I came across a box, that had, literally, (no exageration whatsoever) hundreds of cassette tapes of interviews I did with people since the 1970's when I was doing radio in Washington, D.C.

School makes 'intentional farting' a detention offense

When I come out from the "Man Cave" to make contact with others of my species, I'm asked, "why do you write about this stuff"?

I have to confess, that often, its because mentally, I never got past high school in humor sophistication and find most of what I write about, very funny. It may seem to others that I'm angry or mad, but to be honest, most of the time, I'm laughing harder than you can imagine. The following, would fit perfectly into this category:

CAMDEN MA (Knox County Times)(Feb 1): The Merriam Webster Dictionary definition for flatulence is brief: "flatus expelled through the anus." And while it's a natural bodily function, it seems some Camden-Rockport Middle School eighth-grade boys are taking it to new heights and making a game of seeing who can expel the loudest and grossest flatus.

According to this week's Fire Cracker school newsletter though, the joke's on the boys as the penalty for "intentional farting" is now a detention.

"Strange, but true, thanks to a bunch of 8th grade boys, intentional farting has been banned from CRMS," the newsletter said. "It started out as a funny joke and eventually turned into a game. This is the first rule at CRMS that prevents the use of natural bodily functions. The penalty for intentional farting is a detention, so keep it to yourself!"

According to a group of seventh-grade students milling around downtown following Friday's storm-related early release, the eighth-graders' escapades are well known in the school.

"They would do it in science class and other places," said Jordan Tyler. "It's a natural occurrence and we all do it 16 times a day."

When questioned where he learned that information, Tyler and the other students all said it was true, though they couldn't remember where they heard it.

One of the other students, Kyle Ruger, said the act by the boys was funny, but he had mixed feelings about whether it was appropriate.

Jordan Knowlton minced no words when she expressed how she felt, saying, "It's gross."

Remy LeVine said he was in the class when CRMS science teacher Brad LaRoche talked to all the eighth-grade boys about the issue, as well as the consequences.

Attempts to reach CRMS Principal Maria Libby Friday afternoon were unsuccessful and school Superintendent Patricia Hopkins said she had not heard anything about the issue or the alleged suspected result, though she did get a good chuckle out of the news.

Its too bad, that these young, knowledge hungry students, couldn't have a field trip to the Virginia General Assembly, where "old farts" are cherished, called, "honorable" and make laws. In Virginia the biggest most obnoxious, odious, farts become House Speaker!

Guv Timmy proclaims STATE HIRING RESTRICTIONS!!

[Pat Murphy is on vacation. This column was written earlier, but not published until today.]

It is a dark day, in political pay-off land, for nephews, distant cousins and folks owed in back room poker games.

People who you would normally see, standing on the corner, vagrant, without proper clothing and blank stares, will not have the comfort of a state job, at least for a while.

You see, Guv Timmy has proclaimed a "State Hiring Restriction". Note that its not a "Freeze" but a restriction, so if you are well enough politically connected, this may not directly affect you.
Loss of Another American Company

As a long time admirer of the Anheuser-Busch Company, the Busch family, and the two local Busch Gardens theme parks (of which I happen to be a season ticket holder), I hated to see the sale of Anheuser-Busch. I don’t blame the Busch family or Company President August A. Busch IV-they didn’t want this to happen.
The bottom line however is that the family only owned 4% of the stock and could not stop it. One thing that caught my eye was a line in an article on smartmoney.com that stated “…Anheuser's directors were sensitive to their duty to do what's best for its public shareholders…” Now that caught my eye for reasons totally different form most people.

Is tax reduction really that confusing?

Dear Editor,

What a shame that another official of the VBTA seems to be totally confused about our local economy, and therefore chooses the wrong means to attain the desired outcome.

Frankly, I share the desire to reduce the real estate tax rate, and in fact, if possible, the actual amount paid by residential property owners.
John Moss has intellect, skill, training to be Virginia Beach Mayor

Dear Editor

RE: John Moss's critique on light rail discloses why he possesses the inestimable skill and profound logic to direct a City's budget.

He will make an excellent Mayor of Virginia Beach! John clearly is interested in the financial well being of the 138,000 homeowners who continue to be "severely tax burdened".

Many thousands of stakeholders are spending 40-50% of their household income on housing costs.
