My main subject today is the shooting of rockets into Israel, because during
the last few days this has unfortunately increased. I will now mention the last
three incidents according to their order. On Thursday evening Grad missiles
were shot from the Gaza Strip into the town of Ashkelon, causing damage to
buildings and cars (one landed in a children’s center, luckily empty at that
time.) By a miracle no people were physically hurt, although many suffered
from mental shock. On Saturday Kassam rockets were again fired into Israel, including the town Sderot which had suffered so much in the past from many similar attacks.

The Israel Airforce responded by bombing zones occupied by
Hamas terrorists and tunnels used for smuggling weapons. An army
spokesman said,”We will not tolerate any attempt to hurt Israeli citizens
and our forces will continue to demonstrate perseverence and strength
against anyone attempting to terrorize Israel. We hold Hamas responsible
for maintaining peace in Gaza.” This constant danger from rockets is surely
not mentioned in the media abroad, but the fact that we now retaliate may
be written about - but as always, surely without mentioning the reason for this.
But the latest rocket attack did not come from Gaza, but from the
Egyptian Sinai desert, presumably fired by some terrorist group (could be
Hamas, El Qaida or even Hizbullah) which had infilterated into this large open
territory. This time the target was our southern town of Eilat.

Five or six Katjusha rockets were shot, but luckily for us they missed their goal.
Two evidently fell into the sea, one into an open space and and two landed in the Jordanian town of Aqaba, one of them in front of the Intercontinental Hotel there, killing one person and wounding a number of others.

The Israel defence Forces are in contact with the Jordanian and Egyptian armies regarding this incident. So far the source of this attack is unclear. Rocket attacks in Eilat are rare but not unheard of. There have been two others during the last five years. Hamas is known to use the Sinai desert for smuggling weapons and operatives in and out of the Gaza Strip through the many tunnels they have managed to build.

As I am writing these lines, a news program has just reported, that there has been shooting in the north today too. Israeli soldiers inside Israel were shot at from Lebanon, one dead and some wounded. Evidently our forces have responded to this. So far I know no more details. With this I end my blog today. Shalom  (peace) from Irene
