The water level of the Dead Sea has been going down and seems to be sinking by almost one meter a year. This is due to the fact that less water is flowing into the Dead Sea (due to drought years) and the high rate of evaporation. One solution to stop this is to dig a canal
and a series of water line conduits from the Red Sea  (Gulf of Akaba and Eilat) to the Dead Sea to replenish and stabilize the water level. Israel, Jordan and the Palestinians have evidently come to an agreement concerning this, but it will surely take many years to build and will need much help in financing.

The rocket shooitng from Gaza continues and yesterday our airforce responded again, hitting only Hammas held areas – not an easy task as those “brave freedom fighters!!” always hide among civilians.

A terrible trageday was averted last week when one of the engines on an EL-AL plane flying to Israel caught on fire, but the captain of the plane managed to return to Heathrow airport in England safely, even without causing panic amongst the many passengers. Many safety crews, and ambulances had been on the ready at the airport, but luckily none were needed. Many similar disasters in the past all over the world have ended much more tragically.

The problem of those not doing military service here is still not settled. The ultra-religious are still against their students serving, and their parties are needed for the coelition government, but even so some other coelition party members have said they will vote against their excemption – this makes a problem for prime Minister Natanyahu for keeping his government together. Large demonstrations for equal service for all have also been going on, but so far we don’t know what the outcome will be.
I? Syria the terrible slaughter of civilians is still going on, many escaping to Turkey and Lebanon to save their lives, but Assad still seems to have control, tens losing their lives everyday..

A number of American medical students have been studying at the world-renowned Haifa Technion and 23 students from cities across America and Canada have just now graduated. These newly qualified doctors will now return for their residencies across America, but it is hoped that some of them will return to Israel and make Israel their home after training. We need you.
Shalom from Irene
