I presume that most of my readers have heard or read about the riots going on in Egypt for almost a week. Cairo, Egypt’s capital, a city of about 18 million people, was the scene of violent chaos as tens of thousands of anti-government protesters stoned and confronted police, who fired back with rubber bullets and tear gas — a major escalation in the biggest challenge to Egyptian President Mubarak’s 30-year rule. The rioters claim it is the bad economic situation which is forcing them to demand Mubarak’s resignation and that no political faction is behind them. But that doesn’t explain the much looting going on, the destroying of property, even breaking into the Egyptiam national museum and breaking up ancient exhibits.
We in Israel believe that if the regime falls, the successor regime will not be a liberal democracy and mostly fear that the fanatic “Muslim Brotherhood” will come into power. Mubarak has kept peaceful relations with Israel all these years, and if the Muslim brotherhood which is supported by Iran, takes over, we are afraid it will be the end of this peace. Mubarak’s military authoritarianism will be replaced by Islamic totalitarianism.
President Shimon Peres met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel a few days ago, and they discussed Egypt, peace talks and the Iranian nuclear program. Concerning Egypt he said “Democracy can not start and end in elections only. True democracy begins on the day after the elections, in granting human rights and concern for citizens’ welfare. And if a religious extremist dictatorship rises the day after democratic elections, (like the Hamas in Gaza) what are democratic elections worth.” He added,” Iran is working to bring a religious hegemony to the Middle East. The Iranian problem is not an Israeli monopoly, but an international problem.

Today I’ll start my blog about events that happened in our neighbouring country Egypt, especially as the first one concerns the Muslim relationship with Christians.
A short time after midnight, a car exploded in front of a Coptic Christian church as worshipers emerged from a New Year’s Mass in the Egyptian city of Alexandria killing at least 21 people, and wounding dozens more. The blast came from a car parked outside the church and of course there was no immediate claim of responsibility for it, although most people blamed the terrorist organisation al-Qaida.
There have also recently been threats to attack Christians in Iraq. Many Christians are now trying to leave Muslim countries.
And again something about Egypt. Another convoy of activists, who began their journey from India and traveled through Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and Syria before arriving in Lebanon last week, wanted to bring material to Gaza, but this time instead of making directly for this area in order not to come into contact with the Israeli navy blockade, they docked in Egyptian Al-Arish.
This was the first attempt to reach Gaza from Asia. Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reported that food, medical aid and toys (of which there is no shortage in Gaza) were allowed to remain aboard the convoy, while 10 generators donated by Iran were among cargo that was banned by the Egyptians. Officials issued permits allowing for the entry of 120 of the activists aboard the ship, while denying entry to 46 others from Iran and Jordan.I know that the sexual harassment trial of our former president has made many headlines in the world, so I won’t go into details of his shameful behaviour, but I do want to mention Israel’s legal system, which makes no difference between people.
All, whether rich or poor, whether important or unimportant, are equal before the law. No matter how important you think you are, no matter how religious you pretend to be, no matter how many powerful friends you have, in Israel you will pay for your crimes. And that is a lesson that should be known by all.
And now for something different. Two Arab employees of the British Consulate General in Jerusalem have been charged with weapon trafficking in connection with an alleged Hammas plot to fire a missile into Jerusalem’s soccer stadium.
The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) said that the consulate employees aided the the plotters of the attack in obtaining guns.
The plotters are two east Jerusalem Arabs, Musa Hamada from the Sur Baher neighborhood and his friend Bassem Omeri, an Israeli citizen from Beit Safafa.
Israeli authorities said that the investigation into these two employees is unrelated to the work they do at the consulate.
Good to know they were caught before they were able to carry out their nasty deed.

The Hizbulla seem to be taking over Lebanon, slowly piece by piece.
The whole southern part of the country is now full with their weapons, hidden in civilian villages near schools, health centers and such, and if fighting ever begins again with that country, according to Israel army sources, they will be able to shoot about 700-800 missiles a day, Scuds and Katjushas, into Israel.
And when/if we shoot back to stop this, of course many innocent people will be hurt and as always the world will rise up against us.
The terrorists like hiding behind innocent civilians, because whatever Israel does to defend itself, the result will look bad. Read the rest of this entry »
I was hoping to write about a more pleasant subject today - and not only about the maritime blockade to Gaza, but unfortunately that is still at the head of our news.
I mentioned the Irish ship briefly on Sunday, but that has become old news - they gave in peacefully, sailed to Ashdod port where their supplies were examined, found suitable, before being transferred to Gaza by land.
Strangely enough, the equipment taken off the Turkish ships earlier last week, is still in our hands.
The Hamas have refused to allow it to be transferred to Gaza. The equipment includes food products, medicine that has expired, as well as used clothing, wheelchairs,
couches and carpets, is being stored.
Now, why don’t they want this “humanitarian” aid?
Now we hear that Iran will also be sending two ships to break the blockade, and if they do so we hope there will not be further trouble.
The Iranian regime is constantly calling for Israel “to be wiped off the map” and has a proven track record of supplying dangerous weapons to Hamas in Gaza and Hizbullah in Lebanon.
Obviously, any shipment from Iran would be a major concern for Israel.
But as before, the so called free nations of the world are ready to condemn Israel for not allowing “humanitarian” aid into Gaza.
It is time for the world to get their facts straight. There is NO humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Palestinian leadership lives in luxury on the millions of dollars of aid sent to them.
Israel allows ample supplies of food, medical supplies and
all necessary items for normal living into Gaza via the crossing check points.
The only items not allowed into Gaza are those that can be used to manufacture explosives and rockets.
Hundreds of Gaza residents are being treated in Israeli hospitals. Israel supplies Gaza with electricity, fuel and water.
The only demand by Israel of all the the Humanitarian convoys is to dock in an Israeli port from where the supplies can be checked before being sent overland into Gaza.
It is difficult to imagine that Turkey would freely allow “Unchecked Humanitarian Aid” to reach the Kurdish people in their struggle for autonomy, so also the British with regards to the IRA, the Spanish to allow aid to the Basques and other countries facing terror problems.
I am sure that NATO forces in Iraq and Afghanistan would not freely allow humanitarian aid to reach the Taliban and El Qaida terrorists.
So why are the European countries behaving like an ostrich, hiding their heads in the sand, not seeing
the real truth?
I sure hope I’ll have a nicer subject to write about next time.
Shalom from Irene
Millions of Jews all over the world will re-tell the story this week of the ancient exodus from Egypt of the Jewish people, and will repeat the centuries-old pledge: Next Year in Jerusalem. This is no empty platitude to be sacrificed at the altar of the catchy “Yes We Can” slogan.

YES WE CAN
YES WE CAN – hold on to Cuban territory (Guantanamo Bay), and refuse the demands of the Cuban administration to return the area – yet at the same time demand that Israel transfer Abu Dis (a neighborhood in East Jerusalem) to Palestinian Authority control BEFORE negotiations are even begun
YES WE CAN – incarcerate Iraqi and Afghan POWs in inhuman conditions – stating that because Guantanamo is not on U.S. soil, the prisoners have no rights under the U.S. Constitution, and, at the same time, demand that Israel release Palestinian terrorists as a gesture of goodwill to Abu Mazen.
YES WE CAN – send U.S. military forces to fight against any regime deemed to endanger U.S. interests – Vietnam, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. – yet, in the same breath, demand that Israel relinquish Judea and Samaria without receiving any security guarantees.
YES WE CAN – treat the Israeli Prime Minister like the chieftain of an Indian reservation who has come to visit the White House.
YES … YOU … CAN – because you are a Great Power, for which everything is permitted and justified.
But let me point out what YOU CAN’T…
NO YOU CAN’T – understand the Middle East mentality. You are unable to understand this different culture; you cannot comprehend that as long as the Palestinian Arabs believe that the State of Israel can be destroyed, there is no reason for them to enter true negotiations on coexistence and a two-state solution.
NO YOU CAN’T – influence the Palestinian Authority to change its Charter, calling for the destruction of the State of Israel.
NO YOU CAN’T – influence the Palestinian Arabs to recognize that the people of Israel have the inalienable right to live within the 1967 borders.
NO YOU CAN’T – influence the Palestinian Arabs to accept the fact that the Jews have a centuries-old attachment to the Land of Israel.
NO YOU CAN’T – prevent the Palestinian education system from teaching hatred and jihad – holy war – against Israel.
Only if – and when – you are able to change the NO YOU CAN’Ts into YES WE CANs, will I believe in the U.S. commitment to the continued existence of the State of Israel.
