VIRGINIA BEACH - - The Police Benevolent Association Inc., an organization of more than 20,000 federal, state, county, and municipal law enforcement officers, has thrown its support and  endorsement behind  Police Capt. John Bell for Virginia Beach Sheriff.

Bell is opposed by GOP State Sen. Ken Stolle, who needs the higher paying sheriff's job, for 3 years to pad out his state retirement fund.

Stolle has been in the Senate for 17 years. He is eligible for state retirement benefits after 20 years. If elected sheriff his retirement pay will be based on his highest 3 years of state income or about $160,000 (depending on raises) instead of his general assembly income of about $28,000.

Bell, a veteran policeman, has risen through the rank to captain.  He decided he would represent the Democrat party in the sheriff's race.
